Red Ribbon GNU/Linux
30Jan/13Off

New Online Update available

This update has been designed for the releases candidates 6 and 7. It includes the following changes:

  • Added a new logout window that includes the "Boot GameOS" option.
  • Added a new version of the Red Ribbon theme.
  • Fixed the hang problems when shutting down and rebooting.

You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

wget http://downloads.redribbongnulinux.comxa.com/online-update-2013-01-30.sh

Then, you must execute it:

sudo sh online-update-2013-01-30.sh

And wait until finished. Then, you must logout and login again.

This update will be included on the next release of the LiveCD.

Note: When you turn off the PS3 if the red light is blinking, don't worry. Now a syscall is used to simulate a problem and to turn off the PS3, but actually everything is ok :).

  1. Great to see your still at it Road – although not many people say it, take the silence of users to mean your work is greatly appreciated :)! I’m currently on RC6 and wondering with these ‘online updates’ you need to install them in succession correct (aka that latest doesn’t do all previously released ones?).

From what I can see RC7 is out, if I do all 4 updates (from after the release of RC6), would that be the same as if I had RC7 (plus the 2 new updates on the 17th/30th)?

Would it be just easier to install RC7, then the 2 Online Updates (17th/30th)?

On a side-note: Flash Player, for streaming videos etc – I know its always a difficult/hack job to get it working – any suggestions?

    Cheers!

    • Hi,

      You’re wellcome. šŸ™‚

The RC7 is the RC6 with the online updates applied. You can install the online updates over RC6 or install the RC7, the result is the same.

Unfortunatelly, Adobe hasn’t released a Flash player version for the powerpc platform. I have tested some alternatives such as GNash but the performance wasn’t acceptable.

I will try other alternatives such as Minitube. If It runs properly I will include It on the distribution.

      Regards

  2. I’m retarded Road, I just read at the bottom of RC7 that it is the same as using the Online Updates – answered myself. Sorry to have bothered you – will apply updates and report back :).

  3. Just to report back, RC6 (now RC7 with latest Online Updates) is going swimmingly well :).

Yeah, would I did some reading once I was all up and running and came across similar things; no flash for powerpc, Gnash and Sparklight (http://lightspark.github.com/) are really only alternatives – but both are not 100%. Its a shame cause its not just Youtube I use, but can’t win them all haha.

Thanks again for your continued efforts!

  4. Hi there!
Planning on installing RC7 (noob), it says it has support for ntfs, does that mean I can install some torrent client like transmission and download files to external USB ntfs hdd?
Because that would make ps3 the ultimate htpc – download media under linux – reboot to game os with your new awesome button and enjoy via showtime with cell acceleration.
Or am just a dreamer? šŸ˜‰
    thanks in advance!

    • Hi,

Yes, you can install Transmission and configure it to use the external HDD to store the downloaded files.

Iā€™m glad you find it useful. šŸ™‚

      Regards
