Red Ribbon GNU/Linux LXDE 14.03

Red Ribbon LXDE 14.03 is based on Debian Jessie and It includes the following changes:

  • Kernel 3.12.6 with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
  • New version of the installer with some features added and some bugs fixed.
  • New version of the Red Ribbon theme.
  • Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 27 release.
  • Blueman is now the bluetooth manager.
  • Added the SMTube application to play videos from Youtube.

I believe that Red Ribbon GNU/Linux is already a mature distribution and I've decided that the version will be based on the publication date, using the year followed by the month, like other distributions.

Also, I'm working in others Red Ribbon flavors based on others desktops, so I've included the desktop name on the release name.

    • Hi,

I have seen the features of CFW Rogero 4.55 and it seems that doesn’t support OtherOS++.

You could try to boot OtherOS++ using the Rebug Toolbox. If it doesn’t works you need to install a CFW with support for OtherOS++.

About Veetle, I haven’t seen a powerpc version for GNU/Linux, however Sopcast is open source and I think it would be possible to install it on Red Ribbon.

      Regards

  2. Hey R04drunner,

Will you be making an online update version of this new release or will I have to download and make a new installation?

On a side note, thanks for creating a easy to use linux distro for the PS3.

    • Hi,

I’m working on an online update, but I think is better and easier to do a clean install.

      Regards

  3. Soon I shall update to the PS3. Thank you. It is a pity that there is no Red Ribbon for Cubietruck (Cubieboard 3), but you can not have everything.

    • Hi,

I think that build an ARM version of Red Ribbon wouldn’t be difficult, but I haven’t a computer based on ARM architecture to test it.

      Regards

  4. Where the hardware driver video ? Which seems to have implemented in Free BSD. Will he ever your distro ?

    • Hi,

The RSX driver has been developed for FreeBSD first because FreeBSD has no X11 driver and it is easier to test.

I haven’t seen progress about this project, but I’m expecting for new information.

      Cheers

  5. Hi there,

Can this be upgraded online, or do you need to reinstall over a previous RedRibbon install?

    Cheers,

    Kal

    • Hi,

      Sorry for the delay.

I’m working on an online update for Red Ribbon LXDE 14.03 and RC 7. It will be available soon. 🙂

      Regards

  6. Is there an easy way to run this on Rebug 4.65.1 ?
Apperently this cfw supports OtherOS++, but i have no idea how to setup everything with minimal risk of bricking.

I would just like to run this off flash drive, nothing fancy like installing to harddrive…

    • Hi,

The Rebug Team has a tool called “Rebug Toolbox”. You can use it to install OtherOS++ on your PS3. You can download it from the Rebug website.

Also, you need to download the Petitboot image (dtbImage.ps3.bin) from here. Once thats downloaded, put it on the root of an USB stick.

Now, plug your USB Drive with the dtbImage.ps3.bin file into the right slot on your PS3, load up Rebug Toolbox, go to “Utilities” and run “Resize VFLASH/NAND Regions”. Once finished, run “Install Petitboot”.

Once thats finished, you can launch OtherOS and install GNU/Linux.

To launch OtherOS, load up Rebug Toolbox, go to “System”, run “Boot OtherOS” with the LV1 Patches option.

Your PS3 should now restart and Petitboot will start up.

To install Red Ribbon GNU/Linux, please take a look at the wiki

      Cheers

  7. trying to install this from a usb pendrive to a usb hdd but keep getting ‘needs 2gb to continue’, the drive is empty. any ideas? thanx

    • a little more info may help. it runs fine on the pendrive, i cant use the live cd (no bluray), need to use a usb hub in order to use hdd and keyboard, latest version of rebug, it will auto create the partitions but keeps telling me it needs 2gb free even tho its a 120gb drive. oh… on a side note, wifi wont connect

      • after more attempts, it does not matter which drive is plugged into the usb hub (to my surprise, the pendrive live install will work fine tho slower again), predefining partitions with gparted doesn’t help either. going to try using rc5 instead and c if it makes a difference as it’s the earliest release i can find. links to the earlier ones may be helpful

        • ok, turns out it didn’t like my usb Hdd. installs from the pendrive to another pendrive without a problem. i’ll c if dd will do some magic.
couldu explain to me, why starting with ‘all patches’ wont let me use wifi but ‘current’ will?

          • Hi,

It might be a bug in the process that gets the disk space. I’ll take a look and do some tests.

You can download previous versions of Red Ribbon GNU/Linux useng the “Files” section at Sourceforge.

I also use CFW Rebug, but I don’t use this option. I’ll test using those patches and take a look to see what may be happening.

Thank you for your notice. 🙂

            Regards

  8. Do you have a mirror and/or source for the ps3 based packages?
